What does this tool do?
It calculates key filing window dates for Post-Completion OPT (F-1) and, if applicable, the STEM OPT Extension window. It also provides a recommended submission timing label (e.g. ASAP / Urgent) and a PDF export summary.
How is the OPT filing window determined?
Earliest filing is 90 days before your Program End Date. Latest USCIS receipt (not just mailing) is 60 days after your Program End Date. The legal filing window is inclusive of both ends.
How is the OPT EAD start date range shown?
We display a simplified range: from your Program End Date up to 60 days after it. Students normally request a start date within that period; actual selection depends on personal plans. The MVP does not let you choose a specific desired start date yet.
How is the recommendation label decided?
- NOT_OPEN: Today is before earliest filing date; recommendation shown as the earliest date.
- ASAP: You are within the first 15% of the filing window (earliest to latest). Early filing reduces uncertainty.
- MID_OPTIMAL: You are in the mid portion of the window beyond the first 15% and not yet near the end; filing is still reasonable.
- URGENT: 14 or fewer days remain until the latest filing date.
- EXPIRED: The latest filing date is past; normal OPT filing window is closed.
How is the STEM Extension window calculated?
You may file up to 90 days before your initial 12‑month OPT EAD end date, and USCIS must receive your STEM I‑765 before (or at latest on) that end date. We show earliest = OPT EAD End − 90 days; latest = OPT EAD End. The projected STEM end date adds 24 months beyond the initial OPT EAD end (approximation; actual card validity depends on approval).
What is the 180-day automatic extension?
If you timely file the STEM I‑765 (before your initial OPT EAD expires), your employment authorization is automatically extended up to 180 days while the STEM application is pending. Always retain your receipt notice (Form I‑797C).
How do time zones affect the dates?
All calculations use calendar (UTC-normalized) dates. Minor local timezone offsets should not affect the YYYY-MM-DD boundaries displayed; however, always verify with official documents if a date is borderline.
Are the dates guaranteed to be 100% accurate?
No. They follow standard published window rules but do not account for unusual circumstances (leave of absence, status changes, mailing delays). Always confirm with your Designated School Official (DSO) and official USCIS guidance.
What future features are planned?
Potential enhancements include email reminders, user saved profiles, multi-language interface, H-1B / Cap-Gap logic, and an AI FAQ assistant. See forthcoming backlog documentation.
